SE 111th

From Holgate to Foster

Focus Area

SE 111th Avenue between Holgate and Foster is a key route for neighbors walking, biking, and accessing nearby wildlife and trails. But right now, this stretch of road is unsafe and uncomfortable for anyone not in a car.

There are no sidewalks. Large puddles collect along the sides of the road during the rainy months, forcing pedestrians—including kids walking to school—to step into traffic. Drivers speed through the area, and poor visibility and blind corners make it even more dangerous.

This page breaks down 111th into two focus areas:

  1. SE 111th from Holgate to Harold

  2. SE 111th from Harold to Foster

What Neighbors Have to Say

“I commute using a bicycle and walk in my neighborhood daily. I simply yearn to feel safer while walking or rolling around my neighborhood.

I would love to see the adoption and implementation of more permanent traffic calming features, such as planters with trees, concrete barriers and, at the very least, a dang ol' sidewalk.”

—S, SE Harold St.

“Due to the speed and high traffic that flies down 111th and the lack of sidewalks, it's so dangerous for pedestrians, who also use the street as a main thoroughfare. So many children use it to walk to school too, including ours. The sides of the are full of mud and pine needles, so in order to avoid it we need to walk in the winding street which has a lot of blind spots.

The intersection at Holgate has a ton of accidents. Because of the placement of the traffic light just a quarter block up at 112th, drivers speed to the light, and it lines up traffic way down the block every morning and afternoon.”

Focus Area: Holgate to Harold

  • This part of SE 111th is a walking route for families and students heading to school. There's no sidewalk, just mud, pine needles, and puddles—so people, including children, have to walk in the street next to speeding drivers.

  • Sidewalks or safe walking paths

Speed cushions with emergency vehicle cutouts as needed

Radar speed signs to slow traffic

Traffic pattern changes or signage to reduce speed near the Holgate intersection

Holgate and 111th

Focus Area: Harold to Foster

This section of SE 111th is a gateway to the Springwater Corridor Trail and Beggars Tick Wildlife Refuge—two of the neighborhood’s most beautiful natural spaces.

The Springwater Wetlands and Floodplain Restoration Project is happening nearby. This is the perfect time to add traffic calming and pedestrian access improvements to match the City's investment in the area.

  • Right now, it's nearly impossible to walk or bike to the Springwater Corridor Trail safely. As a result, most neighbors simply do not have the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful neighborhood resource, or use it as a route to commute to work by bike.

  • Sidewalks or safe walking paths

Speed cushions with emergency vehicle cutouts as needed

Radar speed signs to slow traffic

Concrete barriers to protect people and homes from speeding cars

Clear pedestrian access to the Springwater Corridor

Solutions

What would work here is what is helping elsewhere. We're asking the City to prioritize basic safety improvements on this street:

  • Sidewalks

  • Speed cushions

  • Radar speed signs

  • Planters with trees

  • Concrete barriers

  • Designated bike lanes
    protected wherever possible
